James Ensor spent nearly his entire life in Ostend, a seaside resort on the Belgian coast, where he developed one of the most distinctive and idiosyncratic artistic visions of the late nineteenth century. Working in his parents' attic studio—their house doubled as a souvenir shop selling carnival masks, shells, and folk objects—he created paintings and prints that defied easy classification yet profoundly influenced twentieth-century expressionism and surrealism.
