Johannes Vermeer spent nearly his entire life in Delft, living and working in his mother-in-law's house where he painted in a front room on the second floor. He specialized in domestic interiors suffused with light—scenes of women reading, writing, or making music in quiet rooms furnished with the same chairs, tables, and carpets arranged and rearranged across his compositions. He worked slowly and sparingly, producing perhaps three paintings a year, and made lavish use of expensive pigments, especially ultramarine.
