Artist community
Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) was a Swiss painter and printmaker who revolutionized the modern woodcut. Born in Lausanne and trained in Paris under academic masters, he absorbed influences from Renaissance masters and Japanese prints before joining Les Nabis in 1892. His woodcuts—stark compositions of bold blacks and whites with minimal detail—depicted street life, domestic interiors, and confrontations between men and women with acerbic wit. The series Intimités (1898) stands as his graphic masterpiece.
