Bernard Buffet was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator born in Paris in 1928. Devoted to figurative art, he developed a distinctive visual language of thick black lines, elongated forms, and muted colors that captured the existential anxiety of postwar Europe. He rose to prominence remarkably early: by 1948, at twenty, he had won the prestigious Prix de la Critique; by twenty-one, he was already compared to Picasso himself. His prolific output—over 8,000 paintings—ranged from religious scenes and still lifes to circus subjects and portraiture, often featuring his wife Annabel.
