ジャン・デュビュッフェ

Jean Dubuffet was a French painter and sculptor who rejected the conventions of European art history to champion what he called art brut—the raw, unmediated creative impulses of children, the mentally ill, prisoners, and other outsiders to the art establishment. Born in Le Havre in 1901 to a wine merchant family, Dubuffet studied painting in Paris but abandoned it repeatedly, working instead in the wine trade until committing fully to art at age 40 in 1942. His breakthrough came quickly: his 1944 debut exhibition sold out within days.
