Henri Martin emerged as one of France's most prolific painters, bridging Impressionism and Symbolism in a career that earned him election to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1917. Born in Toulouse in 1860 to a cabinet maker's family, he trained under Jules Garipuy before moving to Paris on a municipal scholarship to study with Jean-Paul Laurens.
