Émile Bernard emerged from Lille in 1868 as a Post-Impressionist painter who shaped the course of late 19th-century modernism through bold artistic innovation and passionate engagement with his peers. After studying under Fernand Cormon in Paris, where he befriended Toulouse-Lautrec, Bernard developed cloisonnism—a style of simplified forms bounded by dark contours—in Brittany.
