Charles-François Daubigny painted the French landscape with unprecedented freedom, working directly from nature to capture light and atmosphere. Born in Paris to a family of painters, he trained under Paul Delaroche but quickly found his own direction after settling in Barbizon in 1843. From 1857, he famously equipped a boat as a floating studio, painting from the Seine and Oise rivers—a practice that inspired Claude Monet. Based in Auvers-sur-Oise from 1860, Daubigny became a bridge between Romantic landscape tradition and Impressionism.
