Charles Cottet painted the dark heart of Brittany. Born in Le Puy-en-Velay in 1863, he trained under Puvis de Chavannes and Alfred Roll at the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian in Paris, where he encountered the circle of artists who would form Les Nabis. But Brittany became his truest subject. After a transformative trip in 1886, he spent two decades rendering the coast's harbors and fishing communities in a grave, somber palette—dawn light on stone quays, the dignity and hardship of Breton life.
