マーク・ロスコ

Mark Rothko created paintings of luminous color fields that transformed abstract art in the twentieth century. Born in Daugavpils, Latvia in 1903, he emigrated to Portland, Oregon as a child and moved to New York in 1923 to pursue art. After early work with urban scenes and mythological subjects influenced by Surrealism, he developed by the late 1940s the distinctive style for which he is known: large canvases divided into floating rectangles of pure, resonant color. These works sought to evoke emotion and spiritual experience.
