Alfred Roll was a French painter who moved between Romanticism and Realism, becoming one of his country's most successful artists of the late nineteenth century. Born in Paris in 1846, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme, Charles-François Daubigny, and Léon Bonnat. His early work depicted landscapes and mythological scenes in romantic style, but after 1880, influenced by Gustave Courbet's realism, he turned to subjects of everyday life. His painting Miner's Strike established his reputation as a major figure.
