ウジェーヌ・カリエール

Eugène Carrière pioneered a distinctive vision of Symbolism through near-monochrome brown paintings suffused with mystery and dreamlike reverie. Born in Gournay-sur-Marne in 1849, he initially trained in lithography before studying under Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, interrupted by capture during the Franco-Prussian War. Success came only after Roger Marx championed his work at the 1884 Salon.
