ジャン＝ポール・ローレンス

Jean-Paul Laurens was a French painter and sculptor who brought the traditions of academic history painting into the modern age. Born in Fourquevaux in 1838, he trained under Léon Cogniet and Alexandre Bida at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he later taught alongside his work as a professor at the Académie Julian. His large-scale historical and religious compositions, informed by strong republican convictions, decorated major public buildings including the Paris City Hall and the Panthéon.
