Édouard Detaille was a French painter and military artist who captured the French army with precision and historical accuracy. Born in Paris in 1848 to a prosperous military family, he studied under Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, who instilled in him a commitment to detailed observation. Detaille established his reputation in the late 1860s with paintings of soldiers and military life, then enlisted during the Franco-Prussian War, an experience that deepened his authority as a painter of warfare.
