Antoine-Jean Gros (1771–1835) was a French painter who turned the drama of Napoleonic warfare into commanding historical canvases. A student of Jacques-Louis David, Gros developed his distinctive style during the French Revolution, eventually following Napoleon's armies across Europe. His breakthrough came with Bonaparte at the Pont d'Arcole (1796), a scene of imperial heroism that secured him Napoleon's patronage.
