佐藤哲三 (画家)

Tetsuzo Sato (1910–1954) was a Japanese painter who spent his entire life in Niigata Prefecture, born in Nagaoka and settling in Shibata. Self-taught through art books, he drew inspiration from Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Gauguin, and Cézanne, as well as guidance from Ryuzaburo Umehara. Sato's subjects were rooted in his native landscape: the Kambara Plain with its tamoki trees and the farmers who worked it. His early work employed bold primary colors in the expressionist manner of Van Gogh and Soutine, earning him two National Exhibition Scholarship Awards in 1930 and 1931.
