Jan Steen painted the everyday life of seventeenth-century Dutch people with a wit and psychological depth that made him one of the era's leading genre painters. Born and raised in Leiden, where his family ran a brewery and tavern, he trained under Nicolaes Knupfer in Utrecht and Jan van Goyen in The Hague, marrying the latter's daughter in 1649. His scenes of raucous celebrations, weddings, and domestic chaos—often laced with moral warning rather than invitation—became so characteristic that "a Jan Steen household" entered Dutch as a proverb for disorder.
