Brett Weston

Brett Weston began photographing at fourteen, in Mexico, alongside his father Edward Weston and Tina Modotti, and by seventeen his prints were included in the landmark Film und Foto exhibition in Germany. A solo retrospective at San Francisco's de Young Museum followed when he was just twenty-one. Working mainly in gelatin silver, he favored the glossy, sharp-edged prints associated with Group f/64 over the softer platinum papers of the previous generation, and historian Beaumont Newhall credited him as the first photographer to treat negative space itself as subject matter.
