Carlo Crivelli

Carlo Crivelli was a Venetian-born painter who spent nearly his entire career away from Venice, working mainly in the March of Ancona and above all Ascoli Piceno after leaving the Veneto around 1458. Trained amid the influences of the Vivarini and the Paduan circle of Squarcione and Mantegna, he nonetheless resisted the naturalistic currents of his time, painting in tempera on panel with gilded, punched backgrounds long after oil had become fashionable elsewhere.
