Biography
Charles Schreyvogel
Artist community
Charles Schreyvogel painted the American West with the intensity of an eyewitness, though he worked largely from his studio in Hoboken. Born in 1861 to German immigrant parents on the Lower East Side, he taught himself to draw without formal training. When Buffalo Bill's Wild West show arrived in Brooklyn in 1894, he went to sketch, beginning a career devoted to frontier scenes and military life. His breakthrough came in 1901 when his painting My Bunkie won the Thomas Clarke Prize at the National Academy of Design, bringing sudden recognition.
