Childe Hassam (1859–1935) was one of the leading American Impressionist painters, celebrated for his luminous scenes of New York streets, New England coastlines, and flag-draped avenues. Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, he trained first as an illustrator and watercolorist in Boston before travelling to Paris in the mid-1880s, where exposure to French Impressionism—he later worked in a studio once used by Renoir—transformed his palette into one of broken color and shimmering light.
