Dalton Trumbo wrote some of Hollywood's most celebrated films—Roman Holiday, Spartacus, Exodus—while becoming a symbol of artistic resistance to political persecution. Born in Colorado in 1905, he became one of the industry's highest-paid screenwriters by the late 1930s, drawing on a background in journalism and novels written in the social realist tradition. When he refused to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947, he was blacklisted along with nine others. For years he wrote in secret, under pseudonyms, even winning two Academy Awards he couldn't claim.
