Fletcher Martin painted the brutal energy of American life—soldiers in combat, boxers beaten down, longshoremen brawling. Born in Colorado in 1904, he taught himself to draw while working as a printer, lumberjack, and boxer before serving in the Navy. In the 1930s he assisted Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros and received New Deal commissions for ambitious public works, including a mural of mining rituals at North Hollywood High School. Martin gained national prominence as an artist-correspondent for Life Magazine during World War II, sketching GI life across North Africa and Europe.
