Biography
Francesca Woodman
Artist community
Francesca Woodman created haunting photographs that challenged what bodies and spaces could express. Working primarily with black-and-white film between the mid-1970s and 1981, she photographed herself and female models—blurred by movement and long exposure, merging into peeling walls and derelict rooms, their faces often hidden or obscured. After studying at the Rhode Island School of Design and spending time in Rome, she moved to New York in 1979 determined to establish herself as a photographer.
