Frank Mechau painted the American West in oils and murals, leaving works in the Metropolitan Museum and the National Gallery of Art that capture the region's landscapes and history. Born in Kansas in 1904 and raised in Colorado, he studied at the University of Denver and the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to Europe in 1929 to continue his artistic training. Between 1934 and 1940, the New Deal art programs commissioned eleven murals from him, mostly for post offices and public buildings across Colorado, Nebraska, Texas, and Washington, D.C.
