George Henry Burgess

George Henry Burgess (1831–1905) was an English-born painter, wood engraver and lithographer who became a leading chronicler of California and Hawaii in the Gold Rush era. Trained in lithography in London, he sailed to California in 1850 with his brother Charles, joining siblings already prospecting near Sonora, where the brothers ran a jewelry business before George turned to sketching the mining camps. Three trips to Hawaii between 1855 and 1871 produced portraits of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma and a celebrated series of Honolulu lithographs.
