Gideon Jacques Denny (1830–1886) was a marine painter who spent his career documenting the ships, coastlines, and harbors of the American West. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he first went to sea on the Chesapeake Bay before joining the 1849 Gold Rush to California, where he worked as a teamster on the San Francisco docks and belonged to the city's Committee of Vigilance.
