Gilbert Stuart

Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828) was the leading portrait painter of the early American republic, celebrated above all for his images of George Washington. Born in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, he trained briefly under the visiting Scottish painter Cosmo Alexander before spending nearly two decades in Britain and Ireland, where he studied with Benjamin West and won acclaim in London for full-length portraits such as The Skater.
