Henry Moore (1898–1986) was an English sculptor whose semi-abstract bronzes of reclining figures and mother-and-child groups became a defining image of twentieth-century public art. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, the son of a coal miner, he studied at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he met Barbara Hepworth. Early exposure to primitive and non-Western sculpture, including a plaster cast of the Toltec-Maya Chac Mool, shaped his move toward direct carving and pierced, hollowed forms often likened to the hills of his native Yorkshire.
