Jan van Goyen (1596–1656) was one of the defining landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in Leiden to a shoemaker's family, he trained with Esaias van de Velde in Haarlem before settling at age thirty-five in The Hague, where he kept a permanent studio. His range was wide—river views, beach scenes, winter landscapes, forest and city views—all rendered in the muted tonal palette of grays, ochres, and umbers that became his signature.
