Janet Echelman

Janet Echelman creates large-scale aerial sculptures that transform public spaces through the play of wind, light, and air currents. Born in Tampa in 1966, she studied at Harvard before traveling to Hong Kong on a Rotary Fellowship to learn Chinese brush painting. A 1997 Fulbright took her to India, where lost luggage redirected her entirely: watching fishermen bundle their nets in Mahabalipuram, she abandoned paint for fiber.
