Jean Charlot (1898–1979) was born in Paris to a family with deep Mexican roots on his mother's side, an inheritance that shaped his lifelong devotion to Mexico. After service in World War I, he settled in Mexico City in 1921, where he befriended Diego Rivera and Fernando Leal and became one of the founding painters of Mexican muralism: his 1922–23 fresco of the massacre at the Great Temple, at the former Preparatory School, was the first mural of the movement completed in true fresco.
