Jean-Léon Gérôme

Jean-Léon Gérôme built a towering career on historical precision and exotic subject matter. Born in Vesoul in 1824, he trained under Delaroche in Paris, absorbing lessons in meticulous detail and grand historical narrative. His 1847 Salon debut with A Cock Fight brought instant success and established him among the neo-Grec painters. After winning a major commission for The Age of Augustus at the École des Beaux-Arts, he used the substantial fee to travel to Constantinople and beyond, returning with Oriental themes that would define his later work.
