Jordan Casteel paints intimate portraits of people she knows and encounters—friends, family, and neighbors in Harlem and across New York City. Born in Denver in 1989, she studied at Agnes Scott College and earned her MFA from Yale in 2014, then moved to New York to develop her practice. Her large-scale figurative paintings explore black subjectivity, humanity, and identity through careful observation and bold color. She works from photographs, rendering her subjects in rich, varied palettes—browns, greys, greens, blues—that respond to light and complicate conventional representations.
