Kenneth Snelson

Kenneth Snelson invented a sculptural language of floating compression—rigid steel pipes held in perfect tension by flexible cables—that made the invisible forces of physics visible and tangible. Born in Oregon in 1927, he studied at Black Mountain College and with Fernand Léger in Paris, then spent decades in his SoHo studio creating monumental structures that seemed to defy gravity. His Needle Tower became iconic.
