Laura Gilpin

Laura Gilpin spent her life documenting the American Southwest through a photographer's eye attuned to light, form, and human presence. Born in Colorado Springs in 1891, she began photographing as a child and studied formally with Clarence White in New York from 1916 to 1917, learning platinum printing and photographic processes that would define her practice. Returning to Colorado, she built a career around portraits and landscapes, eventually focusing on Navajo and Pueblo communities and the dramatic terrain of the region.
