Lawrence Argent created some of the most recognizable public sculptures of the early 21st century, working in a distinctive vocabulary of curves, swells, and organic forms that seemed to move across their surfaces. Born in Essex in 1957 and trained in Melbourne and Baltimore, he moved to Denver in 1993 to teach at the University of Denver, where he would remain for the rest of his career. Argent pioneered digital sculpting, using computer-aided design to realize forms that would have been impossible to achieve by hand—sweeping, fluid shapes that caught light and seemed almost to breathe.
