Leon Kroll painted the human figure with the directness of a draftsman and the warmth of someone devoted to capturing character. Born in New York in 1884 to a musical family, he trained under John Henry Twachtman at the Art Students League and Jean Paul Laurens in Paris, arriving at a figurative style that remained rooted in observation even as modernism advanced. He showed at the Armory Show in 1913 and exhibited with Robert Henri's Independents, a circle that included Hopper and Sloan.
