Maya Lin

Maya Lin designs landscapes where human intention meets natural systems in careful balance. Born in Athens, Ohio in 1959 to Chinese immigrant parents, she studied architecture at Yale, where at twenty-one she won a national competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Her minimalist black granite wall, controversial at first, became one of America's most visited sites and established her reputation for works that operate as wounds or openings in the earth.
