Artist community
Persis Goodale Thurston Taylor was a Hawaii-born painter and sketch artist working in the mid-nineteenth century, remembered chiefly for her landscape views and silhouette portraits. Born in Kailua-Kona to Asa and Lucy Goodale Thurston, members of the first company of American missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands, she spent several formative years in Lahaina, Maui, where she assisted at the seminary press of Lahainaluna School. Two of her landscape drawings were engraved there, giving her work an unusual place in the early printed imagery of the islands.
