Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a French painter and printmaker from Rodez who became known worldwide as "the painter of black." Trained briefly in Paris before studying in Montpellier, he opened a studio near Paris after the war and worked from the late 1940s in a resolutely abstract, black-dominated idiom, exhibiting early in Paris, Venice and New York.
