Pieter de Hooch

Pieter de Hooch was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age, born in Rotterdam and baptised there in 1629, who spent his working life moving between Rotterdam, Delft, and Amsterdam. In Delft, where he joined the Guild of St Luke alongside Johannes Vermeer, he turned from early scenes of soldiers and tavern life to the quiet domestic interiors and sunlit courtyards for which he is now remembered — women at housework, children, and servants observed with warmth rather than moralising distance.
