Richard Lorenz painted the American West with an eye honed in Europe. Born in Thuringia in 1858, he trained at the Royal Academy of Art in Weimar, where he studied sculpture and drawing under Heinrich Albert Brendel, a specialist in animal anatomy. After eight years in Weimar and winning the Carl Alexander prize twice, he moved to Milwaukee in 1885. There he began as a specialist in painting horses on large panoramic canvases, then in 1887 left to sketch across the western United States.
