Robert Beauchamp

Robert Beauchamp painted creatures and figures that were both frightening and amusing, rendered in expressionistic colors and thickly applied paint. Born in Denver in 1923, he grew up orphaned and impoverished during the Depression but found his way to art through a devoted high school teacher. After military service and brief studies in pottery and sculpture at Cranbrook, he settled in New York in the early 1950s. There he studied with Hans Hofmann and became part of the Tenth Street gallery scene, though he resisted abstract expressionism and remained committed to figuration.
