Titian Ramsay Peale grew up inside his father Charles Willson Peale's Philadelphia Museum, where as a boy he began drawing insects and birds with a precision that would define his life's work. He joined the 1817 Academy of Natural Sciences expedition to Florida and Georgia, then in 1819–20 traveled to the Rocky Mountains with Stephen Long, filling sketchbooks with plants, animals, and scenery. Later trips took him through the Carolinas and Florida collecting birds for Bonaparte's American Ornithology, and in 1831–32 up Colombia's Magdalena River.
