Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was a woodblock print artist of Edo (now Tokyo), trained in the Utagawa school under Toyohiro after early study of Kanō-style painting. Beginning as a fire warden's son who inherited that post as a boy, he turned to landscape printmaking around 1830, a shift crowned by his journey along the Tōkaidō road in 1832, which yielded The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō.
