Wang Hui (王翬), born in Changshu in 1632 and active until his death in Beijing in 1717, was one of the most celebrated landscape painters of the early Qing dynasty. Grouped with three other artists as the "Four Wangs," he came from a family of painters — his great-grandfathers, grandfather, father and uncles had all worked in the art — and he began painting as a child before studying further under Zhang Ke and Wang Shimin.
