Willard Van Dyke moved fluidly between photography and film, driven by a conviction that art could address urgent social questions. Beginning as an apprentice to Edward Weston in 1928, he co-founded Group f/64, championing sharp-focus photography against pictorialist conventions. By the mid-1930s, frustrated that still images reached too few people, he shifted to documentary cinema. His films—including The City, shown for two years at the 1939 New York World's Fair, and Skyscraper, nominated for an Academy Award—combined visual rigor with commitment to social inquiry.
