William F. Cogswell (1819–1903) was an American portrait painter and printmaker, largely self-taught after working as a young man in a color factory in Buffalo, New York. He built a career as a itinerant portraitist, working in New York City, Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Chicago through the 1840s–60s, and travelled to California during the Gold Rush of 1849, later turning his sketches of San Francisco into a large panorama that toured to acclaim. He is best remembered for his portraits of Ulysses S. Grant, still hanging in the U.S. Senate, and of Abraham Lincoln, held by the White House.
