William Hart (1823–1894) was a Scottish-born American painter who became one of the Hudson River School's leading landscapists. Born in Paisley, he emigrated with his family to Albany, New York, in 1831, and trained as a decorative and portrait painter before a European trip, underwritten by Dr. James H. Armsby, redirected him toward landscape. Settling in New York City by 1853, he worked from the Tenth Street Studio Building, became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1858, and later served as president of the American Watercolor Society.
